Retaining a Neighborhood’s Character

This home was originally constructed nearly a hundred years ago in what was then the outskirts of Missoula, and for decades it was maintained as a traditional bed & breakfast run by a local family.

The home truly was and is a landmark in what is today the bustling Rattlesnake neighborhood. When they saw it listed, this young couple fell in love with the look of the home, the neighborhood, and its proximity to school and trails. However, being newer to the Missoula area, the client did not want to simply “come in” and change the look of this neighborhood mainstay.

So they came to us to help them craft a solution. They wanted modern updates, all while retaining the home’s classic farmhouse feel: the big exposed beams, stainless steel finishes, and cool interior. They had a big-picture vision, but needed help fleshing out the details and the “hows.”

In the end, we remodeled the entire interior of the home while leaving the exterior completely unchanged. We even reframed the exterior front door but kept the original door! Today, if you drive by the home, it looks exactly the same from the outside as it has for decades, but the interior is completely updated with contemporary touches and modern amenities
