Adding Space and Moving Up

This growing family was quickly running out of space, but they loved their schools and neighborhood in central Missoula. They came to us looking for solutions, and while they didn’t want to give up their modern sensibility, they also didn’t want a remodel that would leave the house feeling overly modern or a little too trendy.

We tackled the challenge by first approaching the design from a functional standpoint, and our suggestion was to add a completely new second story while doing only a light remodel on the first floor. This decision to grow “up and out” allowed us to incorporate light, space, and height, giving the family more breathing room amidst very contemporary touches such as the high ceilings and exposed steel ladder to the loft.

Any remodel typically comes with at least one good challenge, and this one was no exception––because we took the roof off to build the second story, we had to keep the downstairs safe through winter! Thankfully, we’ve been at this long enough here in Missoula to navigate construction challenges in all seasons.
