The Historic Home Remodel: Matching the New to the Old

This remodel project was a great example of how an owner’s vision can evolve and change over time, and how we at Confluence approach the process of distilling and finessing a dream into reality.

This homeowner came to us–– we were recommended to her by one of our subcontractors. She and her husband had one child with another on the way, and knew they needed more space for the growing family. But at the same time, they loved their neighborhood and location. At first, they were considering an add-on to the kitchen or garage. After debating some initial remodel options, they started looking at other local lots and homes for sale. But they soon came back to a decision to remodel their current home, and we were ready to work together to craft a solution for their needs.

This project was an interesting challenge that we took to right away. This couple liked the modern look, but simultaneously wanted to maintain the traditional feel of the original home. We strove to uphold the home’s historic heart while bringing a contemporary sensibility. In particular, we had fun getting creative with the main staircase, showcasing the original foundation against the modern finish.

The best part of this project? The couple’s second child arrived while we were nearing completion. Talk about bringing in the new.
