Thoughts for Remodels
Maybe your family has finally outgrown your single shared bathroom. Or, the pandemic has made it so both you and your spouse work from home, and you need not one, but two home offices.
Whatever the reason, you’ve decided it’s time for a remodel. Whether you’re looking to overhaul the home you’ve owned for years, or you’ve just purchased a new-to-you home that needs an upgrade, now is the time to really dive into thinking specifics. How exactly do YOU want it to look and feel?
Get going and get looking
Remodeling a home will take time and money, and there will be a LOT of decisions to make along the way. Our number one piece of advice is ... start now. Join Pinterest or Houzz and peruse other people’s projects to see what you like or don’t like. Does your friend have a home with finishing touches that you love? Ask them about it. Start watching some home makeover shows on HGTV and take notes.
Let’s be honest, you probably didn’t go to school for architecture or interior design, so you can’t expect to create the perfect look all by yourself. You’re going to need some help figuring out your color schemes, what type of countertops make sense for your family, and whether subway tiles for your backsplash will go with your vintage refrigerator. If you’re having trouble making up your mind, consider hiring a professional. (We can help with that).
There’s a good chance you’ll be living in this newly remodeled house for a long time, so don’t rush the process. Take your time to visualize the layout. Where will your friends and family gather when they come over? Where will you toss your keys and wallet when you come home at night? Do I really need a huge mudroom?
Patience is a virtue …
Another important point to consider is this: remodels take time. Building a house from the ground up can surprisingly often be easier and less time consuming than a remodel (it’s true). Be patient with the process. Would you rather look back in 10 years and think, “This house is not exactly how I wanted it, but at least it got remodeled quickly” - or - “Sure, it took a bit longer than I’d anticipated, but my house is exactly what I hoped it would be.”
Remodeling your home is a big decision, but it can be a fun and rewarding process if you go into it in the right mindset. Do your research, visualize your new home, and (try to!) be patient.
You’re making your mark on western Montana, a wild place filled with tall tales and all sorts of history. Pour yourself a glass of wine in the evening and let your imagination go to work.
By remodeling, you’re holding on to a piece of the past all while adding your own chapter. Have fun with it.
